Sport Psychology and Psychology of consciousness

Academic Area :  Behavioral Sciences

COURSE PREFIX  :  PSYC/KINE

Course Number:   3362

Course Title:  Sport Psychology

 Type of Course:  Elective

Description of activity:   (200 words or less)

Coached by Jesus Portfolio Project:

Each student conducts an individual application of the teachings of Jesus Christ to sport psychology by completing the Let’s Get Personal and Let’s Get Going sections of Alan Nelson’s book Coached by Jesus. Each student completes daily assignments from the Nelson text to be compiled as a portfolio project.   This portfolio project counts as one exam or 20% of the grade in the course.  Applications from the Coached by Jesus text include (but are not restricted to): goal-setting, confidence-building, self-talk, imagery training, relaxation training, and attention and arousal applications.

Example sessions:

Coached by Jesus Session 3:  What are your blind spots?  (Matthew 7: 3-4)

Key Concepts of this Session:

  • Become aware of when you blame or think “less” of others.
  • Christ-centered life: Christ Consciousness
  • What/Where is your focus? Why?
  • Seeing metaphysically
  • Seeing with the mystical eye

Portfolio Questions:

  1. Are you interested in detecting your own weaknesses?
  2. What might be your potential blind spots?
  3. What do you learn about yourself when you notice the failures of others?
  4. How might your irritation about others weak points serve as a diversion from working on yourself?
  5. What are three things that you want to improve?  How can the awareness of these keep you humble and gracious when dealing with others?
  6. Who could you approach to get honest feedback about your blind spots?

Coached by Jesus Session 27:  What makes a good leader?  (Luke 22: 25-27)

Portfolio Questions:

  1. Who do you identify with as a leader, and what traits do you want to emulate?
  2. What kind of leader do you want to be?
  3. What are you doing to pursue a servant-leader attitude?
  4. Do you know anyone who is a servant leader?  How does this person influence others without a heavy hand?
  5. Do you know anyone who is a nonservant leader?  How does this person influence without a servant’s attitude?
  6. List three benefits of servant leading that outweigh the world’s prescription for effective leadership.

Course Title:  Psychology of Consciousness

 Type of Course:  Elective

Description of activity:   (200 words or less)

The objective of the course is to examine role of consciousness in the self-management of behaviors and spiritual growth.  Specifically, metaphysical awareness and mystical union are compared and contrasted.

Example:

Key Concepts:

Defining and exploring the metaphysical domain: Mind, mental capacities, sensory encoding, perceptual processing, memory storage processing, retrieval of information and imagery from memory, emotional responses, belief systems, internal dialog (self-statements or thoughts), conscious decision making, and many others. Also included are:

   Meta-cognition: thinking about thinking

   Meta-attention: attending to attending

   Meta-awareness: awareness of awareness

Mystical Domain:

   Is the mystical subjectively different from the above metaphysical processes?

   If so, how is it different?

Thought Experiment:  Did You Eat of the Tree of Bi-polar Pears (Pairs)?

Examine bipolar dimensions as they relate to one of your personal goals, personal beliefs, or social relationships. Bring to your attention and awareness nonproductive or destructive emotional behaviors for this task. A bipolar dimension that correlates with strong, seemingly uncontrollable emotions will teach you the most in this activity. Try these examples:

 1. The love/ hate bipolar dimension

         Ask yourself: What/Who do you love?

         Ask yourself: What/Who do you hate?

2. The good/ evil bipolar dimension

         Ask yourself: What/Who good do you see around you?

         Ask yourself: What/Who evil do you see around you?

 3. The create/ destroy dimension

         Ask yourself: How/what do you create in your inside (metaphysical) and outside (social and physical) environments?

         Ask yourself: How/what do you destroy in your inside (metaphysical) and outside (social and physical) environments?
